45th Annual Meeting of the Clay Minerals Society
Clays of Demeter
April 5-10, 2008
New Orleans, Louisiana, USA

For Students

Students are very important to the Society and we are working to make this meeting as affordable, enjoyable, and beneficial as possible for you.

.

  • Housing: Because we believe it is important for all members of the Society to be able to come together in the same location as a group, we have negotiated significantly lower rates for graduate students to encourage them to join other members of the Society at the Bourbon Orleans. Room rate for students: $109 plus taxes and room charge (~ $125 total) for single or double occupancy.

.

  • Roommates: If you would like help identifying a roommate for the conference, please send an email to Brenda Ross at bross@cottey.edu identifying yourself as a student and providing the following information: dates of arrival and departure, male/female, smoking/non-smoking. I will work to put you in contact with others who are looking for a roommate.

.

  • Student Reception (Sunday, 5:20 – 7:30 PM): All students, and all first-time participants in a CMS meeting, are invited to join us for a reception in your honor. Hor’s d’oeuvres, beer, and wine will be served in the St. Ann Salon 1. The St. Ann Salon is located in a small building located on the same block as the Bourbon Orleans. Entrance is from St. Ann Street, which may be accessed by going through the rear of the lobby area. Please ask at the desk if you have difficulty locating the reception.

.

  • Travel Funds: The Clay Minerals Society has available student travel grants up to $1000 ($1,500 for intercontinental travel) for students submitting an abstract for the CMS meeting. See details on the Student Travel Grants pageon the CMS web site. The deadline for application is January 31, 2008.

  • Workshop Discount (50%): All participants in the workshop will purchase their tickets through the ACS registration & ticket site for a price of $100. Students will be reimbursed half the cost of the ticket ($50) after participation in the workshop. For a student who has received a CMS travel grant, the $50 reimbursement will be considered part of the grant unless you have reached the maximum allowable amount of $1,000 ($1,500 for intercontinental travel). In that case, you will be reimbursed $1,000 ($1,500) plus the additional $50.

.

  • Hospitality Suite: The Bourbon Orleans has agreed to make available to us a hospitality suite for the duration of the meeting. The hospitality suite is located on the third floor, in a corner room with two stories and a balcony. The hospitality suite will be equipped with a refrigerator and microwave and is available for your use. The student reception will be hosted in this room, and I hope this room will continue to be used throughout the meeting.
