Vice President for Student Life

Dr. Mari Anne Phillips has had the privilege of experiencing Cottey College’s positive influence on students from three perspectives: as a former student, as a member of Cottey’s Executive Team and as a Cottey mom.

“I am a proud 1976 graduate of Cottey College. I came to Cottey from Las Vegas, Nevada, having learned about it from my best friend’s mother who was a P.E.O. Returning to Cottey was the best career decision that I ever made. Cottey has been such a large part of my life, including being the Alma Mater for my two daughters. I love working in higher education and at Cottey. It is such a hopeful and empowering environment. In my position, each day is new and different, and filled with opportunity. I am blessed to work with great students, staff and faculty, and it is rewarding to play some small part in helping young women envision and achieve their dreams.”

Dr. Phillips graduated from Cottey College and went on to earn her B.S.W. in Social Work, and an M.S. in Psychology from Pittsburg State University. Phillips earned an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from the University of Missouri, Columbia, in 2002.

Dr. Phillips began her career at Nevada State Hospital, an inpatient adult psychiatric facility. She worked in the facility for over 11 years, first as a clinical social worker. Upon completion of her M.S. in Psychology, Phillips worked as a psychologist.

Dr. Phillips returned to Cottey College in 1989 as Coordinator of Counseling. She has served as Vice President for Student Life since 1993. In this position, Phillips is a member of the President’s Council and has worked with three consecutive presidents. She supervises the areas of counseling, health services, spiritual life and campus diversity, housing, campus activities and athletics. Phillips also serves as co-leader for Cottey’s sophomore trips and has participated in nearly all the trips since the program’s inception in 2000.

In her spare time, Dr. Phillips spends time with her husband and family in Missouri, Arkansas and Utah. They enjoy camping, boating, skiing, hiking and being outdoors. Phillips and her husband love spending time with their six grandchildren, one of whom is a future Cottey girl.
