SPRING BREAK 2012 BARCELONA ITINERARY
Sunday, March 4: Depart Kansas City,
Missouri
Students and faculty will leave the Cottey campus by chartered bus
and travel to Kansas City International Airport for an overnight
flight to Spain aboard a major airline. There typically will be
three or four different flights to accommodate the whole group.
Monday, March 5: Arrive in Barcelona
After clearing customs, a tour representative will meet your flight
at the airport. We will travel to our hotel by motor coach.
After check-in at the hotel, there will be a walking tour of
Barcelona to acquaint you with the local Metro travel, money
exchanging, and other general information which you will find
useful while in Barcelona. During this walk, you will be introduced
to some of the city highlights such as the mile-long tree-lined
boulevard of Las Ramblas which runs from the Plaza de Catalunya to
the monument of Christopher Columbus pointing out to sea.
The remainder of the day will be free to explore or rest.
Tuesday, March 6: Guided Sightseeing Bus Tour of
Barcelona
The guided bus tour will depart from the front of your hotel at
9:00 a.m. The guided tour will take us past the controversial and
still unfinished La Sagrada Familia. This masterpiece of twisting
spires and colorful mosaics was designed by Gaudi, who estimated it
would take 200 years to complete. We will continue on to Gaudi's
masterpiece, the fantasyland of Parc Guell, complete with a bright
mosaic lizard fountain and the longest bench in the world. Finally,
there will be a spectacular view of the harbor from atop Montjuic
Hill, where much of the 1992 Olympics took place.
This tour may give you some insights as to where you will want to spend your free time exploring in more depth some of the historic and cultural treasures of Barcelona. The bus tour will last approximately three hours and the remainder of the day is free time.
Wednesday, March 7: Faculty-Planned Educational
Excursion Modules:
Faculty participating in the Barcelona trip will be developing
day/evening outings in which each student will have an opportunity
to select excursions of her choice. Each student will be expected
to participate in two faculty-planned educational modules, one on
Wednesday and one on Friday.
Thursday, March 8: Guided Excursion to
Montserrat
We will journey to the picturesque town of Montserrat, which
inspired the composer Richard Wagner as he wrote Parsifal. Its
rugged mountain setting attracts thousands of pilgrims every year,
who come to pay homage to the Black Virgin in Montserrat's
9th-century monastery.
Friday, March 9: Faculty-Planned Educational Excursion
Modules
Each student will be expected to participate in a faculty-planned
educational module.
Saturday, March 10: Free Exploration Day with Evening
Farewell Dinner:
Everyone has a final day to explore the city. We will gather that
evening for a farewell dinner.
Sunday, March 11: Depart Barcelona
Buses will transport the Cottey group to the airport for the return
flight to Kansas City. You will be informed of the departure time
Saturday evening. Those students staying the second week in Europe
will be responsible for their own transportation leaving the
hotel.
