Comets Easily Win Home Opener

Wednesday, November 14, 2012

The Cottey College Comets had little trouble with Ozark Christian College as they rolled to a 97-33 win in their home basketball opener last night.

The Comets jumped out to a quick 11-0 lead in the first 1:44 of the game with three-point baskets from Blaklee Sanders, Chelsey Rowland, and Dayna Turnbull along with a two-pointer from Bailey Braden. OCC called a quick time out, but all that did was momentarily slow the Cottey offensive juggernaut in the first half. The Comets took an overwhelming 53-17 lead into the break.

The Comets could do little wrong in the first 20 minutes as every player on the roster scored. The pressing defense created a number of Ozark turnovers which were quickly turned into baskets. If the Comets had shot as well in the second half as they did in the first, they would have easily topped 100 points.

Sanders had a double-double on the night, reaching double figures in points and rebounds with 15 and 10 respectively. Other players in double figures for scoring were Selena Gochenour with 10, Kennadi Howard with 12, Turnbull with 10, and Braden with 12.

The win raised the Comets' record to 2-0 on the season. Next up is a home game on Friday, November 16, against border rival Ft. Scott Community College. That game will tip off at 6 p.m. inside the friendly confines of Hinkhouse Gymnasium.
