Friday, February 14, 2014
Cottey College is pleased to announce the hiring of Austin Bunn as the coach of the new cross-country program. He has already begun recruiting for the Comets’ first season next fall.
"We are thrilled to have Austin take the reins of our newest athletic program,” said Dave Ketterman, head basketball coach and athletic director. “Austin has several years of experience coaching high school cross-country and track, and he is a runner himself, having competed at the intercollegiate level when he was a student.”
From 2005-2008, Bunn coached at Marion C. Early High School in Morrisville, Missouri, where he had eight individual state qualifiers in cross-country. His girls’ cross-country teams were conference champions in 2006 and 2007.
Since 2010, he has been the head cross-country and track distance coach at Jasper R-V Schools in Jasper, Missouri, where his girls’ cross-country team was the district champion in 2013. Two of his girls’ team members qualified as all-state, with a seventh-place finish at state in 2013, and a tenth-place finish at state in 2012.
As a Southwest Baptist College Bearcat, Bunn was a member of the Academic All-American Team from 2001-2004; was a cross-country Academic All-American in 2004, and was the champion of the Baker University Cross-Country meet in 2004.
In 2007 he was a member of the team that won the USATF Club Cross-Country 10K Championship, and that same year he won the Mountain Home, Arkansas, Half-Marathon and set the course record.
Bunn has a vision for the Cottey College Cross Country program to be not only one of the top tier programs in the NJCAA Region XVI, but to also position them to be among the leaders nationally at the NJCAA level. He said, “I believe I can inspire a winning attitude, as well as build character and academic excellence in the Cottey College student athletes.”
Bunn is actively recruiting for the Comets and looking forward to next season. Young women interested in competing for Cottey should fill out the athletic interest form on the Cottey website on the Athletics page.
