COTTEY ALUMNA JOSERYL BECKELY TO PERFORM ON AUG. 17 & 25

Mezzo-soprano Joseryl Beckley, Cottey Class of 2000, will share her talents with the public on two different evenings for two special events. The public is cordially invited to hear Beckley on either Sunday, August 17, at 7:30 p.m. or on Monday, August 25, at 7 p.m. Both academic musical presentations will be held in the Auditorium of the Haidee and Allen Wild Center for the Arts.
Beckley will sing on August 17 as part of Cottey Seminar. Seminar is a biennial event where state and provincial officers of the P.E.O. Sisterhood come to campus for an educational weekend about the college they own and support. Her presence on August 22 is part of the Opening Convocation for all students, faculty, and staff. Her academic musical presentation will be in lieu of a guest speaker.
Beckley, a dramatic mezzo-soprano from Sierra Leone, West Africa, is currently a doctoral student studying opera and voice at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. She has performed in various operas such as Afiwa by Ballanta, The Dialogues of the Carmelites by Poulenc, Cosi fan tutte by Mozart, Porgy and Bess by Gershwin, The Florentine Straw Hat by Roti, and The Cunning Little Vixen by Janáček. She is a student of the world renowned coloratura soprano Nancy Hermiston.
She holds master’s and bachelor’s degrees in performance from Indiana University, Bloomington, and was a student of Virginia Zeani. She was a student of Professor Theresa Spencer at Cottey College.
Her presentation will include songs by Mahler – Songs of the Wayfarer, Russian songs by Rachmaninoff, Spanish songs by Obradors, and some operatic arias by various composers. Her accompanist will be Richard Williams from University of Missouri Conservatory of Music, Kansas City, Missouri.
The Center for the Arts is on the northeast corner of Austin and Tower streets in Nevada, Missouri.
