The Case for Cottey

Virginia Alice Cottey had a big dream. She started her school with $3,000 and an unwavering determination to provide young women with the same educational opportunities that were available to young men. At the same time, the P.E.O. Sisterhood also had big dreams and was fostering its own philanthropic focus on the advancement of women’s education.

Today, Cottey College stands as a physical manifestation of the commitment of the P.E.O. Sisterhood to this shared purpose. In an era when women’s colleges and, indeed, many private liberal arts colleges, face great challenges, Cottey continues to thrive, thanks in large measure to philanthropic support from its alumnae, P.E.O., BILs, and friends of the College.

The importance of philanthropy to Cottey College cannot be overstated. Tuition and fees account for 42 percent of the operating budget; another 5.7 percent is from P.E.O. dues. The balance of the budget is a result, either directly or indirectly, of philanthropy through contributions to the Annual Fund from alumnae and friends of the College, P.E.O. Chapter gifts, and from interest earned on endowments.

Your generous support of Cottey College provides resources that support the three threads of a Cottey education – women’s leadership, global awareness, and social responsibility. Because of your gifts, our students are engaged in active learning, leadership immersion experiences, and community service. By supporting Cottey, you help deserving students realize the unlimited potential of their lives.
