Choosing a Major
Choosing a major can be difficult and sometimes confusing for many students. Some students are very certain about their college major choice, some are fairly sure but have doubts, some students have narrowed down their choices, and some are totally undecided. Confusion or indecision about majors and careers is NORMAL and expected. With so many choices, how can one decide?

Start by exploring . . .

  • Volunteer or gain work experience
  • Enroll in a variety of academic courses
  • Visit the transfer and career planning coordinator
  • Participate in extracurricular activities
  • Talk with faculty advisors about majors
  • Utilize the Academic Assistance Center resources
  • Set up an informational interview or job shadow
  • Talk to people in careers that interest you

At Cottey, we encourage you to select a major and a career goal appropriate to your interests, abilities, values and motivation. We assist you in self-discovery so you can make educated decisions for yourself throughout your life.

There is no deadline for making a decision, but narrowing down your choices can help you plan for the future.

What Can I Do With A Major In . . .?
You may want to know how to make the connection between your perspective major and specific occupations. Some people will work in occupations directly related to their majors, others will find employment because they are a college-educated person with a variety of qualities that prospective employers value. It is important to remember that your future occupation may relate more to your personal career interests, work values and skills than to a specific academic major. The bottom line is that college graduates use their education in a wide variety of fields.

Cottey's "What Can I do With A Major In . . .?" is designed to get you thinking about occupations related to a particular field of study. These options are not all of the occupations you might consider. Also, some of these occupations require education beyond a bachelor's degree. You are encouraged to research these and other options further by visiting the Academic Assistance Center, RBAC 164, or by contacting the professional associations for specific careers.
