COMETS DEFEAT BBC

The Cottey College Comets tied their season high for victories with a win over Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri, last night. The Comets took the win in four games, 20-25, 25-16, 25-6, 25-18.

Cottey got off to a slow start in the first game, falling behind 8-15. The Comets never quit, however, and pulled within three points at 19-22, but just couldn't quite overcome BBC's lead.

The momentum from the last half of the first game carried over to game two as Cottey kept fighting and pulling away from the Lady Patriots. With an 18-13 lead, the Comets kept the pressure on and outscored the home team 7-3 down the homestretch.

Tied at one win each, the Comets finally broke loose in the third game and showed what they were capable of achieving. Cottey scored the first seven points before allowing BBC to score.

"We actually kept the hammer down finally, and had that 'killer' instinct that I had been looking for all evening," said head coach Marla Kannady Foreman.

Game four looked like it was going to be a repeat of game three as the Comets built leads of 7-1 and 15-3. With the game seemingly in hand, however, Cottey let off the gas a bit and allowed the Lady Patriots to make a game of it. A 6-13 run by the home team put them within striking distance at 21-16. Fortunately, it was too little, too late for BBC as the Comets captured the final points for the victory.

Team leaders for the Comets were Jesse Jargowsky with seven aces, Ashleigh Bryson with 23 assists, Anna Cruse and Lauren Jenkins each had 10 kills and four blocks, and Carmen Kintz had 17 digs.

With the win, the Comets raised their record to 17-6, and tied their season record for wins. The 2005 team also won 17 games. The Comets will have a chance to break that record on Monday, October 27, when they host their final home match of the season against Northeast Oklahoma A&M Community College. Game one will begin at 7 p.m. inside the friendly confines of Hinkhouse Gymnasium.

According to Foreman, Monday's match will decide where Cottey gets seated in the postseason tournament. If the Comets beat NEO, then they will play Meramec in the tournament and go to the East Central bracket. If the Comets lose to NEO, they will play Florissant Valley and end up in the Longview bracket.

"My players have tied the record with 2005, and really want to beat it," said Foreman. "I believe they are in a very good seat to make that happen next week, and to continue that into the regional/district tournament on November 7 and 8."
