COMETS LOSE TO LONGVIEW
The Cottey College Comets were defeated Wednesday night by the Longview Lady Lakers 19-25, 10-25, 9-25.
Longview, a perennial Region XVI volleyball powerhouse began their season 0-3, and was looking to take out some early season frustrations. They were able to do that to the Comets in the last two games in particular.
"We played up a step from our match in Joplin," said head coach Marla Kannady Foreman about game one. "Our serve receive and overall passing has improved from match one to match two. We kept with them [Longview] throughout the first set, and made some really great plays along the way. Our serving did not hinder us, and it is nice to have a team that is capable of serving this well, this early in the season."
However, it was a different matter entirely after the competitive first game as Longview played almost error-free and took advantage of the Comets' mistakes.
"We made too many unforced errors, which cost us ever being competitive with the powerhouse team that Longview is during the next two sets," added Foreman. "It's so frustrating when we can't keep our endurance or our confidence level up that we were obviously showing in set one."
On the night, team leaders for Cottey were Natalie Larsen with eight assists, Taylor Means with five kills, Janelle Crowell and Andrea Hass with three blocks each, and Chrissy Echeverria and Emily Moore with eight digs apiece.
The loss dropped the Comets' record to 0-2 on the year. After beginning the season on the road, the Comets get their first taste of home cooking on Saturday, September 5, when they host a tri-match against Labette Community College and Ft. Scott Community College. Cottey is scheduled to play matches at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
