COMETS SWEPT BY ALLEN COUNTY

Allen County (Kansas) Community College swept the Cottey College Comets volleyball team Monday night at Hinkhouse Gymnasium, 25-19, 25-19 and 25-7.

The Red Devils were like most of the opponents the Comets have faced this year, they were taller and had a deeper bench. Despite that, the Comets fought hard in the first two games of the match and, at times, played evenly with Allen County.

Although the Red Devils jumped out to early leads in games one and two, Cottey rallied to tie both games. The Comets were down 1-4 in game one, but tied it at eight and again at 15, and were down by the same 1-4 score in game two, but tied the game at four points and again at eight. They were within two points in game two, at 13-15, before Allen County used its height advantage to pull away.

In game three, the opponents deep bench began to take its toll on the short staffed Comets. The Red Devils scored the first five points of that game, and never let up on offense pulling away to an easy third game victory.

Allen County's Andrea Miller was the Comets main nemesis on the evening as she had six blocks and seven kills, dominating the net in games two and three.

Team leaders for the Comets were Kailey Kelly and Amanda Taylor with six kills, Natalie Larsen with 20 assists, Janelle Crowell with two aces, Taylor with five blocks, and Emily Moore with 13 digs.

With the loss, the Comets' record dropped to 1-14. Cottey is scheduled to visit Parsons, Kansas, Friday evening for a triangular meet against Labette Community College and Northern Oklahoma before concluding its home schedule next Monday when the Lady Norse of NEO A&M visit the friendly confines of Hinkhouse Center.
