COMETS WIN IN ROUT AT HOME
The Cottey College Comets snapped a three-game losing streak in decisive fashion with an 83-46 rout of St. Louis Community College-Forest Park on Saturday.
The Comets let their defense do the talking in this game as they pressured the Lady Highlanders early and often, intercepting passes and not allowing the visitors to get into rhythm or set up their half court offense. Cottey was up 42-19 at the break, mostly on the strength of the press and the fast break offense. Bailey Beale led the home team in the first half with 13 points.
The second half was more of the same as the Comets went on a 20-4 run in the first seven minutes of that half to build a commanding 62-23 lead. The largest lead of the day was 41 points at 66-25 with just under 10 minutes left in the game. Comets' head coach Dave Ketterman substituted freely in the second half, but the Cottey defense, regardless of who was on the court, controlled the Lady Highlanders from beginning to end.
Amanda Sanders was the leading scorer for the Comets with 15 points. Natascha Lord added 14, Beale finished with 13, and Alex Noble just missed a double-double with ten points and nine rebounds. As a team, the Comets finished with 28 steals and 33 rebounds on the afternoon.
The win raised the Comets' record to 11-9 on the season and 4-4 against Region XVI opposition. Cottey will hit the road on Tuesday, February 9, to
face Penn Valley. The next home game will be Saturday, February 13, against Hesston College. That game will tip off at 2 p.m. inside the friendly
confines of Hinkhouse Gymnasium and will also be senior recognition day.
