Department of Biology

Biology
Student in the Biology Laboratory Cottey’s biology program is designed to prepare students for further study in biological fields such as ecology, zoology, botany, and physiology. Pre-professional preparation for teaching, medicine, nursing, physical therapy, veterinary medicine and research is also an integral part of the advising and curriculum. The biology facilities are located in Grantham Hall with laboratories for biology and anatomy and physiology. Located at B.I.L. Hill is a natural field site for research and class work that contains both woodland and wetland environments.

We have a strong curriculum in the biological sciences, and our small class sizes (enrollment limits of 16-24 students) allow us to offer the added advantages of greater personal access to professors and laboratory instruments. Lecture courses (with the exception of our nutrition class) have accompanying laboratory sections which emphasize early and repeated exposure to current experimental techniques. Our academic facility is spacious and well-equipped, and our resources are committed entirely to undergraduate education. We specialize in helping students make the transition from high school to upper division collegiate coursework.

Our present curriculum includes Introductory Biology, Principles of Biology, Botany, Zoology, Physiology and Anatomy, Genetics, Molecular Biology, and Scientific Principles of Human Nutrition. The various courses of study in biology at Cottey College can provide you with preparation for further work in a variety of disciplines such as medicine, biomedical research, physical therapy, biochemistry, genetic engineering, environmental studies, genetics, and animal science, to name just some of the majors our graduates have entered at their transfer institutions.
