Dr. Robert L. Jones III
B.A. Zoology-Botany - Butler University, Indianapolis, Indiana
M.A.T. Biology - Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana
Ph.D. Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology - Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana
Personal Statement:
My area of specialization is in molecular biology, which is a foundational discipline for virtually every other area of biology, including the medical sciences. Although I advise and teach students in a variety of areas, I am always interested in helping interested young women pursue courses of study which lead to medical school or graduate research. My major professional emphasis is on undergraduate education and the development of improved curricular materials for teaching the biological sciences in both lecture and laboratory settings.
Students who complete my sequence of courses in Principles of Biology (BIO107 and BIO107L), Genetics (BIO204 and BIO204L), and Molecular Biology (BIO206 and BIO206L) will learn to transform bacteria, isolate DNA from bacterial cells, construct recombinant DNA, and amplify and examine human DNA from their own cheek cells. They will also receive training in how to read original research articles from the scientific literature and to interpret DNA sequencing data. Emphasis is placed on understanding the structures, properties, and functions of biological molecules such as proteins and nucleic acids and on how these molecules are arranged into the larger structures which form living cells. This course of study is designed to fit with the strong program Cottey College offers in Organic Chemistry, and graduates who succeed in our Biology and Chemistry courses have shown a high degree of success in related majors at their transfer institutions.
