Professor Mary McNerney
 Miss Mary McNerney, associate professor of education, coordinates the education program with Crowder College. Miss McNerney earned her bachelor of science degree in physical education from Mt. St. Scholastica College in Atchinson, Kansas. She earned her master of science degree in education from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois. Before coming to Cottey College, she taught for ten years at St. Edward Central Catholic High School in Elgin, Illinois. Miss McNerney came to Cottey as an instructor in the physical education department. Currently, she is the coordinator of academic advising and student disability services. She teaches Strategies for Academic Success, a non-credit course that helps to strengthen learning skills for college level work. She serves as an adjunct professor of education for Crowder College. She teaches Introduction to Teaching and Educational Field Experience. Miss McNerney was selected to receive the Missouri Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2000. She was named a Woman of Distinction by the Ozark Council for Girl Scouts in 2001.
Miss McNerney views education as a journey and she is a guide. As a guide, she is responsible for exposing you, the traveler, to new ideas, concepts, theories, and experiences and to revisit ideas, concepts, theories, and experiences from your past. You, the traveler, have the responsibility of contributing knowledge gained during previous travels. You, the traveler, have the responsibility to be an active participant in the journey. All individuals may take part in this journey. Realizing that each individual is different, the guide must make sure that multiple strategies are used to enhance the traveler’s experiences and learning process. Frequent opportunities for the traveler to demonstrate the knowledge gained are extremely important. The journey should be challenging, enlightening, positive, and rewarding for participants.
