Department of English

Cottey Student WritingCottey's English Department offers courses in writing and literature that recognize the integral relationship among thinking, reading and writing.

Because Cottey believes written communication is a cornerstone of a liberal arts education, the College requires six hours of English Composition for graduation, and courses in composition are restricted in size to maximize the learning experience of student writers.

Cottey alumnae regularly note the strong instruction they had in composition, which prepared them for academic writing on the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Highlights of department instruction include the development of student portfolios that exhibit the acquisition of skills and techniques, the use of writers' groups to create an environment in which students learn from one another as well as their professors and student writing consultants trained by faculty to provide additional assistance in development and revision of writing assignments.

As for vocational possibilities, English majors have traditionally entered the fields of teaching and law, but the value of learning how to write well and read critically extends to all disciplines and complements careers in journalism, radio, television, advertising, publishing, public relations, business, the sciences, the fine arts and the ministry, to name just a few career areas.

The English Department boasts professors with a strong commitment to teaching and research. They have instructed engineers in technical writing and edited regional newspapers, as well as published poetry, fiction and scholarly articles. Most important, they believe the instruction offered during the first two years of college to be critical to the success of all students. To learn more about our faculty, click on the links provided.
