Sigma Kappa Delta
Sigma Kappa Delta is Cottey College’s English Honor Society. Sponsors for the chapter are Dr. Don Perkins, associate professor of English, and Dr. Trisha Stubblefield, assistant professor of English. Members must meet the following requirements:
- Have completed a minimum of one college course (excluding developmental courses) in English language or literature
- Have no grade lower than a B in English
- Have a minimum grade point average of 3.3 (on a 4.0 scale) in general scholarship
- Have completed at least one semester or two quarters of college course work for a cumulative total of twelve semester hours
- Students are not required to be English majors.
Cottey’s SKD group is highly active in the campus community. The honor society members regularly sponsor, organize and present poetry or fiction readings; organize a “Battle of the Bards” competition with the theater honor society to test knowledge of Shakespeare; and come together to visit with one another and share observations about literature on Dr. Perkins’ farm in the country. SKD also supports the production of The Image Tree, Cottey’s literary magazine.
- Some advantages to SKD involvement include the following:
- The prestige of membership in a national honor society.
- The ability to apply for scholarships and awards.
- A vote at all chapter meetings of the society.
- Eligibility to serve as a chapter officer.
- The opportunity to attend scholarly presentations and colloquia of the sponsoring academic department.
- The opportunity to represent the local chapter at state, regional, and national conventions
- The receipt of other benefits, such as publications, of the Society.
- The opportunity associate with other Sigma Kappa Delta members on local levels and regional levels and with Sigma Kappa Delta and Sigma Tau Delta members on the national level who share your interest in literature, the English language, and fine arts.
