Dr. Angela Firkus
Associate Professor of History and Political Science
Dr. Angela Firkus holds the Ph.D. from Purdue University. She teaches both United States history and political science courses. These include the two-semester survey class in U.S. history, the history of women in the U.S., the history of the American West, American government, and comparative politics. In addition, Dr. Firkus often works with students outside of her standard classes. She has recently supervised a directed study on how wars are remembered in memoirs and in popular culture. She also has a number of ongoing projects in public history that her students work on. She supervises architectural preservation research, a photograph cataloguing project in the Cottey College Archives, and ongoing work for the local history museum.
In addition to teaching, Dr. Firkus remains active in the history profession. She is doing research and writing about the history of the American West and attends conferences in her field. Her recently published book is titled Route Across the Rocky Mountains and is available through Purdue University Press. She is also a member of the State Historical Society of Missouri, the Society for History Education, and the Organization of American Historians.
