Dr. Catherine Campbell
A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Catherine Campbell is an alumna of Mount Holyoke College, where she majored in French and history. She then attended Colgate University, from which she received a Master of Arts degree in the Teaching of French.
She taught high school for one semester in Whitesboro, New York, and for three years in Poland, New York, a small town just north of Utica. At the end of her third year, the School Board decided to eliminate the position of French teacher to save money.
After a year of substitute teaching in Ohio, Dr. Campbell returned to graduate school at the University of Missouri-Columbia to achieve her doctoral degree. Her dissertation was on the subject of the procuress in French Renaissance comedies. She received her degree in 1982. Since then, she has taught at Cottey College.
Her interest in these comedies continues, but she was a participant in an NEH Summer Seminar on the subject of humor in the works of Rabelais, another Renaissance writer. Since that summer, she has divided her research between the plays and his works.
She continues to be an active scholar in these two areas by regularly attending conferences and presenting papers. She has also published two books: her dissertation, published by Peter Lang, and a translation of a comedy by Pierre de Larivey, La Veuve, published by Dovehouse. She has also published numerous book reviews in professional journals, including French Review, Sixteenth Century Journal, Renaissance Quarterly and Opera Quarterly.
In addition to the entire French curriculum, Dr. Campbell also team-teaches, with Dr. Dyke Kiel, Professor of Music, a course entitled "Literature and Opera." She has been chair of the Humanities Division since 2000.
