Department of Music

The Cottey music department has been a vital force in the life of Cottey students since the College's founding in 1884 and has been a member of the National Association of Schools of Music since 1956.

The music department's mission is to successfully prepare students for transfer as music majors into baccalaureate degree granting programs and to provide a music enrichment program for all students. To achieve its mission the faculty of the music department have developed the following goals: to offer courses of study in music appreciation, music literature, music theory, applied music, and music ensembles and to offer these courses at all levels of study from beginning to advanced.


Applied Study
Any student at Cottey, regardless of her major, can take applied lessons in brass, percussion, piano, strings, voice, and woodwinds at a level appropriate to her ability and career goals.

Students who take applied lessons at Cottey pay no additional fees for lessons, use of instruments, or for use of practice rooms. Most practice rooms have Steinway or Baldwin pianos, and instruments are available for all areas of private study. Vocal and instrumental students do not pay additional fees for a piano accompanist.

Music majors whose emphasis is performance often give public recitals in their second year.

Ensembles
The department's ensembles include a pops choir, a chamber choir, a wind ensemble, a jazz ensemble, and duo piano. These ensembles are open to both music majors and non-majors who have the appropriate abilities in music performance.

Performances
Throughout the year, on-campus performances are given by students, faculty and guest performers, which are free to students. Transportation is also frequently provided to off-campus events. As a part of the international experience students have attended performances of the Royal Philharmonic, the English National Opera, a performance of Chicago at the Adelphi theatre, a ballet at the Paris Opera, the Orchestre de Paris, and the Orquesta Sinfonica de Madrid.

Music Scholarships and Awards
Music scholarships are available to incoming freshmen; second-year students are eligible for several music awards given at Cottey's annual Honors and Awards Ceremony.

Mu Sigma Epsilon Honorary Music Society
Students who participate in music performances at Cottey are eligible to be a part of Mu Sigma Epsilon, one of a number of clubs on campus.
