Department of Physics & Astronomy
Physics develops an understanding of physical phenomena through study of classical and modern theory in conjunction with laboratory experience. It fosters intellectual curiosity and is important in the natural sciences, social sciences, engineering, law and health fields.
The physics laboratory equipment includes an air table, air tracks, spectroscopes, e/m apparatus, microwave optics system, two IBM compatible computers and interface systems, Millikan oil drop apparatus and other standard physics laboratory instruments.
We offer a variety of courses which fulfill freshman and sophomore level course requirements for a degree in physics at most transfer institutions. These courses are calculus based general physics (I and II and their corequisite laboratories), calculus (I, II and III), and differential equations. All our classes are small. This means that you will get individual attention and you will gain hands on experience from your laboratory experiments. We know from the experience of our past students that our small classes will prepare you extremely well for your future studies.
Considering physicists study nature at its most fundamental level, from subatomic particles to super clusters of galaxies, the strong background you gain here at Cottey can lead to further study in physics, biophysics, astronomy, geophysics, meteorology, engineering and medicine. We are convinced that your initiation into a very satisfying career will begin here at Cottey in our small classes.
