Opportunities in Theatre and Speech

General

  • Delta Psi Omega, the national honorary dramatics fraternity for junior colleges, was created to honor its members for their work in college theater productions. Students become members by accumulating points by being cast in shows or working on tech crews.
  • Students attending Cottey have the opportunity to attend approximately thirty performances each academic year. This includes performances by our music, theater and dance students as well as guest speakers and performers contracted by the College as part of our Cottey Lecturers and Artists Super Series.
  • Faculty in the department of theatre and speech offer opportunities for students to accompany them to off-campus performances and conferences in nearby Kansas City, Joplin and Branson, Missouri. Travel expenses are paid for by the College.

Performance and Technical

  • A Cottey student may participate in several play productions during her two years on campus. There are usually two major plays scheduled each semester in addition to dance and music recitals and visiting road shows.
  • She can gain experience in every phase of theater production including: acting, assistant directing, stage managing, set design and construction, stage lighting, sound, costuming, makeup, and publicity.

Scholarships
To apply for a scholarship in theatre and speech, the applicant should submit some aspect of her work in theater: a portfolio, set design, costume designs, an academic paper on some aspect of theater, an original play, other creative project, or a performance of a dramatic or comedic monologue of no more than five minutes.
These may be submitted on video-tape, electronically, in person, or through the mail. All applicants are asked to submit a brief essay addressing the question: "What do you believe is the role of theater in society and how has theater had an impact on you, personally?" Students may be contacted for a telephone interview.
