Welcome Letter from Helen Lodge,
Director of Housing/Assistant Dean of Student Life

On behalf of the residence hall staff, welcome to the Cottey residence halls!  We are all anticipating another great year in the residence halls and are anxious to meet you in August.

At this time of year, the majority of my job as director of housing/assistant dean of student life involves making housing assignments.  You may be wondering how your housing assignment was made.  Housing assignments are based on the requests made by residents on their housing application.  Returning residents first sign up for rooms in the spring, and then assignments are made for new residents. Individual requests are given as much consideration as possible.  Earlier deposit dates are given priority in regard to single room and specific requests.  While every effort is made to meet as many individual requests as possible, it is impossible to meet every request of every resident.

Roommates are hand-matched according to the information submitted on the housing application.  Common areas of interest or leisure time activities, music choices, neatness preferences, as well as other criteria, are used to match roommates with the goal of some areas of commonality.

Roommate matching for compatibility is an educated prediction based on past roommate experiences.  Every effort is made to make the best roommate matches possible.  However, it is impossible to predict successful interaction between roommates due to many other factors, such as individual personalities, that are impossible to determine from paper.  Housing changes are always permitted within the options available at any time of the year.

As you prepare to pack to come to Cottey, I would encourage you to remember to bring an open mind, your best set of communication skills, a healthy amount of consideration for others, a positive attitude, lots of room for compromise, and plenty of smiles.

Enjoy the summer!!!  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. My office telephone number is (417) 667-6333, ext. 2104, or you may e-mail me at hlodge@cottey.edu.
