International Experience

Cottey students in ParisIn every college, there are those students who take time to travel abroad and learn about and explore other cultures. Those students always seem to have a broader perspective of the global society. International travel appears to positively impact a student's education; unfortunately, it's been limited to those whose parents can afford it. If only there were a way that all students could benefit from the international experience. At Cottey College, the ideal becomes actuality each spring. Second-year Cottey students, in their fourth semester at the College, spent the first week of break together in Paris, France, March 4-10, 2007.

The International Experience trips began in 2000 when Cottey College first took students on a trip to London. In the last eight years, the College has traveled to London, Paris and Madrid. In 2008, the second-year class traveled to Italy for the first time, visiting both Florence and Rome. Best of all, the program will not cost the students any additional money, either in program or transportation fees or in tuition increases.

Members of the Cottey faculty and staff are involved in the planning. Faculty integrated on-campus instruction and activities with trip preparations. Professors selected for the trip created educational modules related to the professor's discipline or interests to be presented on site in Paris.

Modules selected for the 2008 trip included the following: Galleria dell'Accademia, the Pitti Palace, a bicycle tour of the Tuscan countryside, tours of the Coliseum, a trip to the Galleria Borghese, and underground Rome.

Of course, it's not all work and no play. Educational modules were scheduled for Tuesday and Friday, Cottey students outside the Prado in Madrid. allowing time for individual siteseeing as well as some other group tour opportunities. In addition, all participants attended a farewell dinner on Saturday at the Centrale Ristotheatre in Rome.

Cottey College has always provided a rigorous educational experience for its students. Now students can add a global education to their résumés as well.
