Marla Kannady Foreman is in her 19th year as the Head Coach of the Cottey Comet Volleyball program, having been with the program since its onset in 2000. She also takes on the administrative duties for the basketball and softball programs. No stranger to athletics or its competitive nature, Coach Foreman has made the gym her second home for most of her life. Attending high school in Lamar, Missouri, she played every sport offered to young women, receiving numerous awards both academically and athletically. Coach Kannady went on to play four years of basketball at Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) in Joplin, Missouri, where her MIAA Division 2 team won the conference championship two years back to back in 1985-86.

Coach Foreman was a student assistant for basketball at MSSU after finishing her playing career and trying to finish up her education, and graduated as a K-12 physical education major, secondary teaching field in biology, with a minor in first aid and coaching. She taught and coached numerous sports at Bronaugh and Sheldon High Schools before coming to Cottey College. Coach Foreman’s teams have received numerous NJCAA academic team honors for maintaining a team GPA of at least 3.0 or above. She’s coached five NJCAA All-Academic First team, six NJCAA All-Academic second team, and one NJCAA All-Academic third team players in the past six years. Over her 19 years of coaching, four young women also achieved Top Ten Academic status at Cottey College, with two of these young ladies receiving the award two years in a row as student athletes.

Throughout her 19 years at Cottey, Coach Foreman has had many winning seasons, and too many wonderful memories to count. She even had the opportunity to coach her daughter, Regan Kannady, during the 2013 and 2014 volleyball seasons. Regan received an Associate of Science degree from Cottey and was accepted into the Cox Accelerated Nursing Program in Springfield, Missouri. Coach Foreman is married to Chet Foreman, a mail carrier for Nevada Post Office, and they both reside in Walker, Missouri. Marla’s first husband passed away in 1998 from a brain tumor.

Coach Foreman loves her job and loves the student athletes she has the opportunity to work with and coach. She strives to give her team members a foundation for the game of life, while also playing volleyball along the way!

Assistant Coach Ashleigh Miller

Comets Assistant Volleyball Coach Ashleigh Miller is in her second season as a coach with Cottey College. Miller, a Nevada, Missouri, native, received her Associates in Arts and Science degree back in 2009 from Cottey College. She continued her education at Missouri State University, earning her bachelor’s degree in entertainment management. Miller has always had a deep passion for volleyball and is grateful for the opportunity to come back to Cottey and make an impact.

Miller played for Head Coach Foreman during the ’08-‘09 season and was sad to leave after graduating and moving to Springfield, Missouri. While attending Missouri State, Miller participated in all volleyball club leagues and open gyms for the community. After completing school in 2012, she met her now husband Nate Miller and moved back to the Nevada area to start a family. They now have two little boys together and a bonus daughter through Nate’s previous relations.  Aside from growing her family, she started her own photography business, Graceful Roots Photography, with her sister-in-law. Getting a chance to fulfill a passion for arts as well as athletics has been a blessing for her and her family.

Since being back in the Nevada area, Miller has been very involved with the volleyball community. She has been active in indoor leagues, sand leagues, tournament play for co-ed teams, and keeping the hype around Nevada strong. Over the last year, she has led one-on-one camps with numerous middle school and high school athletes to help grow their knowledge of the game and continue to strengthen their skills. During this time, she has been a stay-at-home mom for her two little boys Maddox and Memphis. She looks forward to having her family be involved with her Cottey adventure.

Coach Miller assists Coach Foreman with weight training duties, core training with the athletes, pre-practice time drills, and pulling together statistical data during home and away road trips for all matches. Coach Foreman is pleased with the knowledge of core training she has, as well as the organizational skills which Coach Miller brings with her, and looks forward to an awesome season working with her!
